As a result good quality stock grows quickly and looks leafy and healthy because it has not experienced severe moisture stress. However in the absence of moisture stress episodes, the root : shoot ratio of the plant declines. Rogers and Head (1969) reported that apples grown in irrigated containers had a root : shoot ratio of 1 : 7.

Form of plant production This has a particularly major impact on the root characteristics of trees. Container growing This is seen by most specifiers as a desirable technique because it involves no loss of roots at planting, and therefore should avoid post-planting check. But is this so?
