During the Great Depression of the mid-1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal established the Matanuska Valley Colony at Palmer. Their success inspired many hunters and traders, known as promyshleniki, who headed for Alaska, exploiting not only the land’s natural wealth, but also the labor of the Aleuts.
